Title:
Exploring young children’s consideration of the speaker’s role in communication through their compositional processing and comprehension of nonliteral language utterances
Abstract
Across a series of experiments with 3- and 5-year-old Norwegian-speaking children, I will document the interplay of some key cognitive and contextual factors in shaping young children’s interpretations of nonliteral language utterances, including idioms. I will do so by providing evidence for their compositional processing and propose that, with age, young children may be increasingly considering the speaker’s role in communication within the broader context of normative social practises and the regularities of word meanings (both concrete and abstract) and their distributions in language use.
